The past two weeks have been a tremendous learning experience. We have been moved by poetry, art, testimonials, images, music, etc. Sitting and participating with artist in residence, Rebecca Kelly was unforgettable. Our students opened up and allowed themselves to be vulnerable in sharing their art and poetry. We began having this level of immersion just before Covid hit and it’s truly been amazing.

Seventh Grade World History, Broad Street School

 I found Ms. Rebecca’s teaching methods to be impactful because the stories and examples she used were relevant and well chosen, as well as engaging. One example of this is when she told us the story of the Terezin camp. Not only did it teach the students about the amount of discrimination, injustices, and horrors that the Jewish people faced, it also was engaging because this information was presented in the form of a story. Secondly, the way Ms. Rebecca taught us was also unique. In one case, we had to create a collage representing or somehow relating to the poem, "I Never Saw Another Butterfly" by Pavel Friedmann. In previous Language Arts classes, we have never created a college before, making this experience memorable. Lastly, another noteworthy part of Ms. Rebecca’s three days of teaching us was the effectiveness of her teaching methods. All of the activities were effective because they gave us a different way of learning about the Holocaust than we normally have. One reason Ms. Rebecca’s teaching was effective was that we had to reflect and utilize the information we learned about. After being instructed to create a blended poem using the poem "I Never Saw Another Butterfly" we had to think about what we had earlier learned and use that information, so we could turn it into a poignant blended poem.
