The Write Stuff

Artist: Freestyle Repertory Theatre

Type: Workshops / Residencies

Designed by a language arts specialist, this workshop with Freestyle Repertory Theatre applies improvisational techniques to free the creativity of young authors. Two artists teach students to release their ideas, develop them into descriptions and characters, and finally organize a complete story. Students are encouraged to accept their instinctual choices for character, setting, and action and to commit to those choices on the page.

“Thank you so much for arranging to have the Freestyle Repertory Theater come into the seventh-grade classes this week. We are about to start a narrative writing unit, and this was the perfect segue into it. What a wonderful duo Laura and Mike are! They were truly engaging and the kids benefitted from their knowledge. Their use of improvisational techniques to prompt the spontaneous development of story ideas was fantastic. I am thrilled with what they were able to pull from the kids in such a short time and how they respected each of the kid's contributions.”
