United We Create Program
Building Connected Communities
Young Audiences is proud to announce the launch of United We Create, a new program to promote understanding between Muslim and non-Muslim students. We are looking for elementary schools interested in joining the inaugural cohort. Students, teachers and families participate through storytelling, song, drumming and poetry to learn about Muslim cultures around the world and strengthen understanding of connections and shared values among different religions and cultures.
United We Create is an arts education program that aligns with character education, social studies world religion units, and anti-bullying curriculums.
United We Create programs are entry points for schools to increase positive perceptions of Muslim identities and build connected communities. Your students will explore the history and culture of a variety of Muslim-majority countries, while recognizing and uplifting Muslim traditions.
In this pilot year, the United We Create program is offered FREE to selected FIRST COHORT Schools. These programs are valued at $8,500.
Pilot Schools will receive:
- Professional Teaching Artists will deliver:
- 2 Engaging Assembly programs for the ENTIRE school
- 8 In-Class Hands-on Workshops
- 2 Professional Learning Opportunities for Your School’s Educators
- 1 Evening Family/Community Art Making Event
- Dedicated YA Staff Coordinating all Planning, Execution and Assessment of Programs
YOUR SCHOOL’S PARTICIPATION IN UNITED WE CREATE WILL ENABLE YOUR SCHOOL TO:
- Create emotional connections between students by using arts activities that encourage empathy and understanding, teach students that differences are to be celebrated, and help students develop positive perceptions of self and others.
- Increase students’ knowledge about Muslim cultures, using the lens of arts to explore folklore, ethos, and traditions.
- Provide professional learning opportunities for teachers to learn strategies for promoting Diversity, Equity and Inclusion grounded in asset approach pedagogy and aligns with active learning practices
United We Create Teaching Artists
WHAT MAKES A GREAT PILOT SCHOOL?
Successful school applicants will demonstrate the need for this program based on:
- An understanding of the role of arts education to impact student learning
- Desire/Need to expand social emotional learning practices
- Dedication to championing and advancing a diverse community
- Desire to attain arts education programming that provides knowledge and access to resources about Muslim cultures
A flexible school administration committed to making the time committed needed to schedule the programs is an essential component to the success of this project. The selected Pilot Schools will also lend their support to ensuring that the United We Create Assessment tools are completed fully and in a timely manner. The assessment will involve participants (students, teachers and families) taking online pre and post assessment surveys. Young Audiences will work closely with each selected Pilot School every step of the way to coordinate the scheduling and logistics needed.
Eligibility to Apply for United We Create:
All New Jersey, Philadelphia (and surrounding five counties) public, charter, private, and parochial schools serving grades Pre-K through 8th are eligible to apply.

United We Create is offered through Young Audiences Arts for Learning NJ & Eastern PA, the premier arts education organization in the region. It is made possible through funding from the Building Bridges program, the national grant-making arm of the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art, an extension of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Since 2007 the Building Bridges Program has supported endeavors that engage U.S.-based Muslims and non-Muslims in arts experiences to increase understanding and advance relationships between communities.
