Description

Arts as Activism is an introduction to the art and techniques of activist art. Participants will begin by exploring a social issue or cause they care about, then create and perform artwork inspired by that topic. They may create poems, protest signs or even dance! Writing techniques, literary devices, and historical events will illuminate opportunities for participants to connect to their own lived experiences and passion. This creative process can be used by participants to help them better understand the social issues impacting people of other identities around them. SEL core competencies of perspective taking, empathy, respecting diversity, understanding societal norms and recognizing community supports will be central to the creative process, while also laying foundations for responsible decision making and relationship skills.
