Rockcreek Steel Drum Band takes students on a journey through the history and development of the modern steel drum instrument from its genesis on the small Caribbean island of Trinidad to its current position as one of the primary components of Calypso music. The band invites students to experience the odyssey of this unique instrument by exploring its African roots and by examining the present influence of steel drum music on today’s global music scene. With an enchanting mix of traditional Calypso songs along with selections of American music and original compositions, The Birth of Steel Drum Music introduces students to the history and culture of the Caribbean through one of its most recognizable and beloved instrument.
